When I finished reading Beloit College Mindset I realized how many things applied to me and just how wide the technological generation gap between us and our parents actually is.  It made me think just how many things we take for granted but also how far we've come technology wise in very little time. I think the list did a good job of showing the cultural differences of our generation in comparison to our parents.

I thought number 71 on the list saying the nation has never approved of the job Congress is doing was a great example of how somethings never change. Also number 31 which talks about how the first home computer we touched was probably a apple II or mac II they are now in a museum shows us how far we've come technology wise in the last 18 years.  Back when computers used to be bulky and stationary to now when they've become downsized and portable.  How a massive tower and monitor is now made to fit in the palm of your hand it is really quite amazing.

From having hundreds of cable channels but nothing to watch, this shows how we've become accustomed to watching TV. when we only had around 8 channels, and how we've strayed from going outside to play. And the example of "viewer discretion" having always been available warning on TV. shows showing our generation being steered toward what our parents thought to be appropriate and strict monitoring of television as we know it.

I thought those examples were accurate, but other items on the list seemed wrong.  For example, numbers 1, 19, and 46.  We learn cursive in school, and I personally use it when I write, but most things nowadays are typed and teachers rarely require assignments in cursive so no one really practices, but that doesn't mean we don't know how.  Secondly before having a cell phone as your house phone became cheaper than having a land line most people I know had corded phones and many still do so twisting and untwisting the cord was a normal thing to do while talking on the phone.  Lastly almost every teenager knows who nirvana was and still listen to much of their music today.

Overall I thought most of the Mindset list was both informative and spot on. I felt the encompassed a lot generation differences and showed how much technology has improved in the past 18 years and how different our generation is from our parents.

  1. I thought the Mindset List depicted how well technology has advanced too. Aside from the exaggerating style of the writer, I think the list accurately represented how past generations utilized technology in comparison to our generation.

  2. I agree that technology has advanced too. They have changed dramastically since our parents were our age becuase now when some new technology comes out my parents usually ask what that is or what it does. This shows how the technology has changed over the generations.

  3. I agree with you about the advancement of technology. Personally, my mom and dad have no business on a computer. My mom has chosen not to use it and my dad tries to use it but is like a caveman. I never really noticed how big the technological gap was until I looked at my parents.

  4. I'm not sure about anybody else, but I know that my parents both know how to use a computer and to some extents cell phones. I'm a computer engineering major, and technology hasn't changed that much since the Atanasoff–Berry computer in 1937(the first computer, which was built at ISU), it's only gotten prettier and faster, but the way it works is still the same. So I disagree with the idea of our parents not knowing how to use technology and that it's changed a lot since we were born.

  5. Well, I have to agree with the "Viewer Discretion" being at the beginning of TV shows. I can't remember a time when that wasn't there. I also agree with the technology comment because that is a big part of my life and it is ever changing. I also remember using an Apple II computer. I think I would die if I had to use that in today's world.

  6. The advancement of technology amazes me as well. My family never had anything fancy relating to technology, so when things started becoming more advanced, affordable to some extent and needed in our society, our family started investing in them. I don't really know what I would do without my laptop here at school and my phone is always by my side. :]

  7. I actually have to disagree with what Shannon said. Sure the way some things work are the same but the technology behind it is way different. Could you imagine anything touch-screen from the year you were born? Or how about a dependable Fuel-Injected Car?

  8. I like the technology comparison between today and older generation's exposure. It is defiantly true that technology has changed a lot. I remember being at my grandpa's house and he had this computer in a suitcase and it's only function was to play tetras. O man, those were the days!

  9. Yeah the technology advances have been great. Even though parents always say they never had it as easy as us, they do need to realize we probably have get more asked of us.
